Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Tuesday that the bill is expected to be finalized soon, allowing the General Elections Commission (KPU) to better prepare for the 2029 elections.
He emphasized that the general elections bill will be prioritized in discussions with the DPR.
Although the bill's deliberation has been included in the 2025–2029 National Legislation Program, there has been no decision on whether the government or the DPR will initiate it. The Civil Society Coalition for the Codification of the General Elections Bill has recommended that the government take the lead.
"The government has already taken steps toward initiation. The Ministry of Home Affairs has collected input and started studying the issue," Yusril said.
He added that his ministry will coordinate the bill's deliberations, following President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to revise the law as part of political reform efforts.
On September 8, DPR's Commission II suggested the bill be deliberated within the commission, as the Legislative Body will soon revise the 2024–2029 National Legislation Program.
"We are proposing that the general elections bill be deliberated within Commission II again in the form of codification or omnibus law," Commission II Chair Rifqinizamy Karsayuda said, explaining that the revision will consolidate other laws into one framework.
