Brigadier General Helfi Assegaf, Director of Special Economic Crimes at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency, said on Thursday that the case involves violations of banking, electronic transactions, fund transfers, and money laundering laws.
Nine suspects have been arrested. Two are BNI employees: AP (50), a sub-branch head, and GRH (43), a consumer relations manager.
Five others—C (41), DR (44), NAT (36), R (51), and TT (38)—acted as fund transfer executors. Two suspects, DH (39) and IS (60), were allegedly involved in laundering the stolen money.
One suspect, identified as D, remains at large.
Two suspects, C and DH, are also linked to the murder of the BRI Cempaka Putih branch head, police said.
Investigators found that the syndicate accessed dormant accounts outside of banking hours and transferred the funds without any physical bank presence.
“The bank detected suspicious activity and reported it to the National Police,” Assegaf said.
Police seized Rp204 billion in cash, 22 mobile phones, a hard drive, two CCTV recorders, a desktop PC, and a laptop as evidence.
Suspects face multiple charges under financial, cyber, and anti-money laundering laws, carrying combined penalties of up to 20 years in prison and fines exceeding Rp200 billion (US$11.6 million).
Authorities are expanding the investigation to identify other potential members of the syndicate within the banking network.
