Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, has called for the accelerated implementation of the country’s blue economy programs through tighter oversight, the development of coastal fishing villages, and efforts to improve the long-term welfare of coastal communities.

“The challenges facing the marine and fisheries sector are highly dynamic, ranging from natural resource management and the implementation of the blue economy to adapting to climate change,” Trenggono said during the inauguration of two new senior officials at the ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Ade Tajudin Sutiawarman was appointed inspector general, while Lotharia Latif was named director general of capture fisheries.

Trenggono said the appointments mark an important step in expediting the ministry’s strategic programs.

He stressed that the inspectorate general plays a critical role in internal supervision to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability, while guaranteeing that policies deliver tangible benefits for the public.

“Careful oversight and continuous evaluation are essential,” he said.

Turning to capture fisheries, Trenggono underlined the sector’s strategic role in strengthening national food security and improving the livelihoods of fishermen.

He also highlighted the Red and White Fishing Village initiative, a community-based development program aimed at creating new, competitive, and sustainable growth centers in coastal areas.

He urged the newly appointed officials to act swiftly in executing their duties and ensuring that action plans are effectively implemented in the field.

“Take immediate strategic steps to support priority programs in marine and fisheries, in order to achieve better welfare for the people,” he said.
