New York (ANTARA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono underlined peace as the fundamental foundation to the pressing global challenges facing the world today.

Speaking at the 2nd G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) on Thursday, held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Sugiono emphasized the vital role peace plays in sustainable development and successful cooperation.

“Indonesia believes that peace is the great enabler, if we want sustainable development, if we want successful cooperation. Because without peace, our common agendas become impossible,” Foreign Minister Sugiono affirmed.

Foreign Minister Sugiono highlighted interconnected global challenges: climate change, widening inequality, food and energy insecurity, as well as escalating geopolitical tensions. He underlined that no country can face these challenges alone.

“No country can address these challenges in isolation. Our strength lies in cooperation through dialogues, partnership, and trust,” he stated.

The Foreign Minister underscored the importance of revitalizing multilateralism, with the purpose of strengthening a more effective and inclusive United Nations, capable of delivering real and tangible solutions.

In this context, Sugiono emphasized that the G20 has an important role in supporting the UN Secretary-General’s UN80 initiative, particularly in enhancing efficiency, reinforcing mandates, and aligning agendas with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“And for this, and for giving full support to the Secretary General's UN80 initiatives, which calls for greater efficiency, stronger mandate delivery, and closer alignment with the SDGs, is crucial role that G20 must play,” he underlined.

He also stressed the urgency of closing the massive financing gap, particularly for SDG funding, which currently requires an estimated US$4 trillion. He warned that without innovation and reform, this gap will continue to widen.

“We need new and innovative sources of finance. Multilateral development banks must be reformed to serve the needs of developing countries. And equally important, we must also address inequality,” Sugiono stated.

The 2nd G20 FMM in New York was held under the South African G20 Presidency 2025, with the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”

The South African Presidency highlighted four priority issues: strengthening global capacity in disaster preparedness and post-disaster financing, reforming the global credit rating system to be fairer, advancing just energy transition financing, and harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth.
