Jakarta (ANTARA) - TNI troops attached to Task Force Habema reclaimed Soanggama Village in Homeyo Subdistrict, Intan Jaya District, Papua, on October 15 from the separatist OPM Kodap VIII/Soanggama group, a military statement said.

In a press release received in Jakarta, Lt. Col. Iwan Dwi Prihartono, commander of Habema’s media unit, said14 of the estimated 30 OPM members holding the village were killed in the clash.

Troops also seized several firearms and documents tied to OPM membership, he said, adding that the operation aimed to rescue residents who had lived under pressure from OPM forces.

“This operation aims to restore security and protect the community from terror and violence previously committed by the armed group,” he said.

According to Iwan, the assault began in the morning when the Indonesian Military (TNI) operatives moved toward the village to carry out a liberation mission.

The rebels opened fire as the troops approached, triggering a firefight.

“At 12:00 WIT, we gained control of the situation and forced the OPM group to retreat,” he added.

Iwan said all civilians in the village were confirmed safe following the operation.

With this action, the TNI reaffirmed its commitment to defending national sovereignty and safeguarding local communities.
