Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to transform unused spaces beneath toll roads into green public areas for residents, especially children, as part of efforts to expand recreational and child-friendly environments in the city.

"I encourage all regions to develop green open spaces for children. I've even asked for parks to be built under toll road pillars," Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said in East Jakarta on Saturday.

He emphasized that expanding green open spaces in the capital is crucial so that children can play and develop through physical activities instead of spending too much time on gadgets at home.

"Hopefully, this year, even if the spaces are small, we plan to build around 300 green open spaces across Jakarta," Pramono said.

Pramono acknowledged that the number of Child-Friendly Integrated Public Spaces (RPTRA) in Jakarta is still insufficient to meet residents’ needs. Therefore, the city government will optimize the creation of small-scale green areas in various neighborhoods.

He believes that parks measuring 3,000 to 5,000 square meters can still function effectively as public spaces.

"These days, parks don't always need to be overly large. What's important is that they serve as green open spaces and playgrounds for Jakarta's children," he said.

Pramono hopes that expanding such open spaces across Jakarta will help meet the city’s green space targets while improving neighborhood environments and supporting healthier lifestyles for residents.
