Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani stated that the Youth Pledge Day serves as a collective reminder of the role and responsibility of the young generation in safeguarding the nation’s democratic future.

Marking the 97th Youth Pledge Day under the theme “Youth in Motion, United Indonesia,” she emphasized that unity and cross-generational collaboration are key to maintaining the nation’s course amid rapid social, political, and digital transformation.

“History shows that from the Youth Pledge to the Reform era, every major national change has always begun with the courage of young people,” Maharani said here on Tuesday.

She noted that the challenge for today’s youth is no longer fighting physical colonialism, but defending common sense, digital ethics, and public morality in democratic life.

Beyond being successors, she viewed the young generation as moral and intellectual drivers of democracy. Hence, she underscored the importance of character education to nurture ethical and virtuous youth.

“In this era of information and technology openness, youth participation in public spaces should strengthen national values, social awareness, and oversight of state policies to ensure they serve the people’s interests,” she remarked.

She also stressed that the state must guarantee young people’s rights, access to education, adequate healthcare, job opportunities, and various forms of protection.

Furthermore, she highlighted the need to protect youth from online gambling, violence, and discrimination so they may live freely and responsibly.

According to her, the DPR and the young generation are partners in shaping Indonesia’s future.

“Happy 97th Youth Pledge Day to all Indonesian youth. Let's uphold unity, strengthen democracy, and build a sovereign, just, and progressive nation,” she stated.
