Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto emphasised that "greed economy" can harm economic development and progress, and APEC economies are encouraged to join hands to combat it.

Prabowo said that the world is facing threats of the greed economy, which is manifested in criminal acts such as corruption and fraud, as well as cross-border crimes such as drug smuggling and human trafficking.

"Indonesia is fighting against corruption, fraud, and the greed economy that hamper true development," Prabowo stated before the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM) in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Friday (October 31) local time.

According to an official statement on Saturday, the president called all nations to unite in the commitment to combat the greed economy. "We need cooperation within the APEC community because transnational smuggling never benefits our economy," he said.

At the same meeting, Prabowo proposed a multilateral cooperation scheme to combat cross-border crimes that threaten nations and the very foundation of the global economy.

"We must work together multilaterally, as we cannot face this problem alone," he said, while highlighting drug smuggling as the example of a transnational crime which requires cooperation among countries.

Moreover, the president pointed out that APEC was founded in 1989 to facilitate free trade and investments through multilateral cooperation based on solidarity in all regions. This confidence must be preserved by all APEC members, he said.

"We must not let our differences harm the stability that has for long sustained our growth," Prabowo remarked.

This year’s APEC Summit is taking place in Gyeongju City, South Korea, from October 31 to November 1, 2025, with President Prabowo among the APEC economic leaders in attendance.

The president’s participation in the summit holds strategic significance, as the APEC bloc represents around 60 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product and more than one-third of the global population.

At the sidelines of the APEC Summit, President Prabowo also conducted bilateral meetings with New Zealand Premier Christopher Luxon and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday.
