“We need support and input from academics to carry out oversight functions for foreign nationals,” said Eko Budianto, the Immigration's Director of Visa and Travel Documents, here on Tuesday.
The center, named the Indonesian Immigration Policy and Analysis Center (Impact), will operate under the Faculty of Law at Unud. It is designed as a collaborative research platform linking practical immigration needs in the field with legal theory.
For the initial stage, the partnership between Unud and the Immigration Directorate is set for five years, running until 2030.
Through the center, analyses of sensitive cases, such as visa misuse for employment, nominee practices in property investment, or handling foreigners from conflict zones, will be conducted from comprehensive legal and economic perspectives.
Unud Rector Prof. I Ketut Sudarsana added that the research center will provide a space for academic and practical collaboration, generating strategic and scientific insights on immigration issues.
“The recommendations and policies developed here are expected to be beneficial to the government, particularly Immigration authorities,” he said, emphasizing the anticipated impact on knowledge, human resources quality, and tangible contributions to society.
In addition, the center will integrate mandatory immigration law courses currently implemented in the university's Master’s and PhD programs.
The collaboration will also open opportunities for immigration practitioners to serve as lecturers, thesis and dissertation examiners, and to access graduate education at the university, further bridging professional practice and academic research.
