Speaking after the meeting, Sultan Hamengku Buwono described the encounter as an important opportunity to exchange views and reinforce mutual understanding rooted in shared history.
“Our discussion also covered other matters that can help us strengthen mutual respect,” he said.
The Sultan highlighted Yogyakarta’s longstanding role as a “second home” for many Timor-Leste students pursuing education in Indonesia, adding, “Let us hope that this bond will remain harmonious as ever.”
Prime Minister Gusmão expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome, calling the trip his first official visit to Yogyakarta.
“It is a great honor for me to make my inaugural trip here. I am very delighted to learn about the history of Yogyakarta directly from His Majesty the Sultan,” he remarked.
He noted that the Sultan had explained the unique constitutional status of Yogyakarta, which was granted special autonomy in 1950 in recognition of its decisive support during Indonesia’s independence struggle.
Yogyakarta remains the only province in Indonesia led by a hereditary monarch.
Gusmão encouraged both countries to continue reflecting on their shared past to build stronger ties.
“What matters now is good cooperation so that we can build a better future together,” he said.
According to Timor-Leste’s Tatoli News Agency, Gusmão’s broader visit to Indonesia also aims to advance negotiations on the maritime border with Jakarta.
He previously attended President Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration in October 2024.
