"The 'super flu' is under control. This strain, or Influenza A (H3N2) subclade K, was first identified in America. Currently, the 63 cases detected in Indonesia have undergone laboratory examination. For prevention, we use the standard influenza vaccine," he said.
He made the statement after reviewing the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program at Public Vocational School (SMKN) 1 Jakarta on Thursday.
Octavianus emphasized that flu cases have decreased over the past two months, noting that spikes typically only occur during the transition between the dry and rainy seasons.
"However, flu cases have dropped significantly over the past two months and fell further in the last two weeks. Flu always peaks at the start of a new season," he explained.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin previously confirmed that Influenza A (H3N2) subclade K has been circulating for a long time like the common flu and is not as deadly as COVID-19 or tuberculosis (TB).
"There is no need for concern. This is the common H3N2 influenza, not a deadly virus like COVID-19," the minister said.
Like the common flu, "super flu" can be recurrent. While cases increase every winter in four-season countries, the increase in Indonesia is less significant. "Therefore, in those countries, an influenza vaccine is administered annually," Octavianus added.
Although the strain is not as dangerous as COVID-19, the minister reminded the public to maintain their health and immunity through sufficient rest and regular exercise.
