Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has earmarked Rp4 trillion (approximately US$230 million) from the state budget to improve railway safety at 1,800 crossings across Java following a deadly train crash in Bekasi on Monday.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto confirmed on Tuesday that the funding will come directly from the national budget.

The program is part of the government’s 2026 work plan, according to State-Owned Enterprises Agency head Dony Oskaria, who highlighted its critical safety aspects.

President Prabowo Subianto announced the initiative earlier this week while visiting victims of a train collision in Bekasi that killed 15 and injured 84.

He noted that many crossings are remnants of Dutch colonial-era infrastructure that have gone decades without comprehensive maintenance.

“We estimate it will be almost Rp4 trillion. For safety,” Prabowo said, adding that the government had identified numerous unsupervised crossings posing serious risks.

The president instructed his staff to resolve the issue through two approaches: building guard posts or constructing flyovers.

In Bekasi, he approved a flyover project under a presidential assistance scheme to ease congestion and reduce accident risks.

Local authorities had previously proposed extensive flyover construction to address vulnerable points.

Prabowo emphasized that the budget must be allocated immediately, given the vital role of trains as mass transportation.

The initiative aims to tackle safety problems at level crossings that have been neglected for nearly 80 years since independence.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation earlier reported that the disaster began when an electric taxi stalled on a level crossing, forcing a commuter train (KRL) to stop for evacuation.

This created a backlog, leaving a second commuter train stationary at East Bekasi Station, where it was subsequently struck from behind by the Jakarta-Surabaya Argo Bromo Anggrek express.
