Kota Padang (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to renovate 131 underperforming class C public hospitals by 2027 to improve healthcare access, particularly in remote and underdeveloped regions, Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus said on Tuesday.

“We will prepare funding for the renovation of 131 underperforming class C hospitals in 2027,” Octavianus said in Padang, West Sumatra.

He said Indonesia has built around 130 new hospitals over the past decade, including 66 facilities upgraded from class D and D Pratama regional hospitals to class C status.

During the initial phase of the hospital development program, the government identified 66 districts that previously had no hospitals, he added.

Of the 66 districts, 14 are located in Papua, including three in Southwest Papua, one in West Papua, five each in Papua and Central Papua, three in South Papua, and seven in Highland Papua.

“Most of these areas are underdeveloped, remote, border and island regions,” Octavianus said.

He added that the 66 hospital locations still require additional infrastructure, medical equipment and healthcare personnel.

“So far, 34 hospitals have been inaugurated,” he said.

Octavianus said the expansion reflected gradual improvements in Indonesia’s healthcare system and services as part of efforts to achieve the government’s “Golden Indonesia 2045” development target.
