Addis Ababa (ANTARA News/Reuters) - The African Union (AU) has set up a panel of five heads of state which will travel to Libya shortly to help end hostilities in the north African country, the AU`s Peace and Security Council (PSC) said on Friday.

"The current situation requires urgent African action in order to facilitate immediate cessation of hostilities," Ramtane Lamamra, Commissioner of the PSC, told a news conference.

Lamamra said the council had rejected any form of foreign military intervention in Libya, where protesters demanding an end to the 41-year rule of Muammar Gaddafi have taken control of parts of the east amid increasingly destructive fighting against government forces.

Lamamra did not say which heads of state would join the panel or when it hoped to travel to Libya. (*)
