The incident at Domodedovo airport occurred Friday and involved a flight for Dushanbe, the capital of the restive Central Asian republic of Tajikistan.
The woman apparently managed to break into the airport grounds the night before and boarded the flight after avoiding passport and other control areas, security officials said.
"She managed to bypass all the controls without being stopped or detected, and then boarded the flight," the Moscow transport prosecutor`s office said in a statement.
It added that a probe had been launched and responsible airport security officials would be punished.
A suspected suicide bomber from the North Caucasus killed 37 people in a January attack claimed by a warlord from Chechnya who seek to establish an independent Islamist republic in southern Russia.
The attack led President Dmitry Medvedev to sack several mid-ranking police officials and led to the ouster of senior Domodedovo managers.
The attack was the second in Moscow in just under a year, and resulted in new security measures at Domodedovo and and other Russian airports and train stations. (*)
