Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has invited his Vietnamese counterpart as head of state, Truong Tan Sang, to visit Indonesia in 2012.

Truong Tan Sang was inaugurated as Vietnam`s new president on July 25, 2011.

President Yudhoyono conveyed the invitation orally through visiting Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the Merdeka Palace here on Wednesday.

Nguyen Tan Dung is making a working visit to Indonesia at the invitation of President Yudhoyono.

"In the meeting with the Vietnamese prime minister, I also conveyed my invitation the country`s new present to visit Indonesia in 2012," President Yudhoyono said.

The president was of the opinion that relations between Indonesia and Vietnam in the past few years were getting better following the conclusion of various cooperation agreements in various fields between the two countries.

According to the president, the visit to Indonesia by the Vietnamese prime minister was a new pillar to step up the cooperation between the two countries.

"We all know that bilateral relations between Indonesia and Vietnam at present are strong and excellent, and therefore we want to strengthen them further in the future," President Yudhoyono said.

Earlier in the day, President Yudhoyono and the visiting Vietnamese prime minister held a bilateral meeting for about an hour to discuss and review the two countries` partnership that had lasted this long.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese prime minister said his meeting with Yudhoyono proceeded in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

"Vietnam positively welcomes the establishment of the Indonesia-Vietnam Friendship Association, and I am sure that the two countries will have a strong foundation to push the ties to a new level," Nguyen Tan Dung said.

Issues discussed at the bilateral meeting were among others related to cooperation in the military, defense, economic, agriculture, and health fields.
