Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that Indonesia would provide assistance for flood victims and restoration in a number of Southeast Asian Nations which were hit by floods recently.

"Indonesia will provide assistance to friendly countries just like what the friendly countries have done when Indonesia experienced natural disasters in the past," the president told the press at his Cikeas private residence here on Friday.

The president made the statement in connection with the floods which affected a number of ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The floods have claimed lives and caused destruction in several regions.

The head of state said that as the chairman of ASEAN, Indonesia had the obligation to play a role in every disaster within the region.

Yudhoyono said that Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had taken steps to channel assitance.

Marty also has cooperated with the foreign ministers of ASEAN to carry out actions collectively.

The president hoped that the assistance would be useful and would be in accordance with the need of the affected countries. But the head of state did not provide details on the assistance it would provide.(*)
