Palembang, South Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Palembang will host a world sepak takraw tournament on February 16-19, 2012, according to an ISTAF (International Sepak Takraw Federation) official.

The international sepak takraw championship would be held in Palembang early next year, Datuk Abdul Halim Bin Kader, the secretary general of ISTAF, said here on Monday.

A number of countries including China, South Korea, Japan and the United States, are expected to participate in the international event.

Chairman of the Indonesian Sepak Takraw Association (PSTI) Basri Sidehabi said Indonesia was ready to host the world championship and it was agreed it would be held in Palembang, South Sumatra Province.

Meanwhile, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin received an award from ISTAF for successfully organizing sepak takraw matches during the 26th SEA Games.

The award was presented by ISTAF Secretary General Datuk Abdul Halim Bin Kader on behalf of ISTAF President General (retired) Chavouck Arrirachakaran here on Monday.

"I am representing the ISTAF president in giving this award to the Governor, in his office at Sriwijaya Jakabaring Sport Stadium, Monday morning," he said.

The sepak takraw championship during the SEA Games in Palembang was the best ever organized at international level, he said.

He appreciated the Indonesian government and the South Sumatra governor in particular for providing the best facilities for sepak takraw matches.

Thailand had so far grabbed four gold medals and Indonesia won three silver and two bronze medals.

The 26th SEA (Southeast Asian) Games, which was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Palembang on November 11, is taking place in Palembang, South Sumatra, and Jakarta, until November 22, 2011.
