Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Well-known Indonesian singer Edo Kondologit has joined a May Day rally in Jakarta.

The singer is amid a crowd marching from the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Jakarta to several landmarks such as the State Palace, Bung Karno sport stadium, and the House of Representatives building.

"This is my responsibility as an artist for Indonesian workers' welfare, which is considered to be still unsatisfactory," Edo said.

He has been encouraging the workers by singing the national song, Tanah Airku, on the top of a car belonging to the Indonesian Metal Workers Union Federation, along with the workers.

According to Edo, the current labour wage of around Rp1.5 million per month is insufficient for the workers and their families` daily needs.

"Labour workers are entitled to have a more decent welfare," he said.

Commemorating the International Workers` Day, as many as 125,000 workers from various unions and confederation in Greater Jakarta areas are holding peace rallies and delivering speeches in several important places of the city.

In the Bung Karno sport stadium, these workers would read out a manifesto containing four Indonesian labour demands, with regard to labourers` social security, abolition of outsourcing work system, reformation of the decent living cost reference component, and demand for Rp1.4 trillion subsidy per year for labourers.

Tangerang Raya Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers Union chairman Rideh Hatam said the rally are done in a peaceful and orderly manner without violence.
