"No outbreaks were detected."
Manila (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - About 2,000 people fell ill in evacuation centers in flood-hit areas in the Philippines, a senior official said.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona said that those sick taking shelter in evacuation centers in Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions have complained of acute respiratory infection, fever, skin diseases, minor injuries and diarrhea.

"Acute respiratory infections comprise 60 percent of these consultations. No outbreaks were detected," he said.

Ona said he ordered the deployment of health teams to all flood- affected areas to assist the displaced population.

The DOH is working with local governments by augmenting supplies of essential medicines including antibiotics, oral rehydration salt solution and vitamin A for children, he said.

Ona said his office is also providing public health services to ensure adequate and safe water supply, toilet facilities and proper waste disposal in all evacuation centers.

Metro Manila and nearby regions submerged in flood waters following the storm monsoon rains that left at least 60 people dead in the past few days. (*)
