"Organizations in this region should increase their role in making global decisions, because they are in a better position to understand the core of the multidimensional problems and challenges facing the region," Yudhoyono said.
Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on regional organizations to play a global role in promoting the values of democracy.

"Organizations in this region should increase their role in making global decisions, because they are in a better position to understand the core of the multidimensional problems and challenges facing the region," he said during the opening of Bali Democracy Forum here on Thursday.

"By increasing their global role, regional organizations can better promote democratic values and reduce conflicts, because such organizations best understand the real situation in their respective regions," the President explained.

He pointed out that ASEAN plays a crucial role in resolving issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The ASEAN also promotes democratic values in the region. I believe ASEAN can contribute significantly to promoting democratic values across the globe," Yudhoyono said.

"I also believe Bali Democracy Forum will contribute a lot to promoting democracy at a global level. I am optimistic that in the long term we will be able to achieve our goals," he added. (*)
