Bogor, West Java (ANTARA News) - The National Narcotic Agency (BNN) and villagers in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java, destroyed khat or chata edulis plants, the raw materials for making narcotic drug cathinone on Thursday.

Cathinone became known following the arrest of artist Raffi Ahmad and some of his friends at his residence for allegedly consuming methylone, a cathinone derivative.

Villagers living on Jalan Alun-Alun Inpres, Cisarua, uprooted the plants that they had cultivated in the backyards.

One of the villagers, Saiful (50), said he had willingly destroyed the plants because they were banned.

He said he had cultivated the plants for two years and had also harvested them several times.

"Every month I earned around Rp3 million from the plants developed on a 300 square meter land," he said.

BNN spokesman Senior Commissioner Sumirat Dwiyanto said on the location that information campaign had been carried out to prevent further cultivation of the plant.

"There are around 55 locations of khat plants developed on a total area of three hectares in Cisarua," he said.(*)
