WWF Indonesia lauded the participants and particularly, the mayors, district heads, and governors who had urged their people to participate in the event, WWF Indonesias Communication and Advocacy Director, Nyoman Iswarayoga, noted here on Tuesday.
The participating cities included Aceh, Padang, Medan, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Lampung, Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Cimahi, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Kota Baru, Sidoarjo, Kediri, Denpasar, Mataram, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Palu, and Makassar.
Earth Hour is a voluntary action that serves a symbol of a commitment to lifestyle changes, which are more environmentally friendly.
Based on estimation, if 10 percent of Jakartas inhabitants observed Earth Hour by turning off electricity power for an hour, 300 megawatt hours (MWh) of power can be saved or is equivalent to shutting down a power plant for the same time period.
Globally, 172 countries participated in Earth Hour this year.
Indonesia had observed Earth Hour for the first time in 2009.
