Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Residents, businessmen, and government officials in 48 cities observed Earth Hour by turning off their lights for an hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, on March 28, 2015, according to WWF Indonesia.

WWF Indonesia lauded the participants and particularly, the mayors, district heads, and governors who had urged their people to participate in the event, WWF Indonesias Communication and Advocacy Director, Nyoman Iswarayoga, noted here on Tuesday.

The participating cities included Aceh, Padang, Medan, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Lampung, Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Cimahi, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Kota Baru, Sidoarjo, Kediri, Denpasar, Mataram, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Palu, and Makassar.

Globally, 172 countries participated in Earth Hour this year.

Indonesia had observed Earth Hour for the first time in 2009.
