Veloso and her family met in a special room, not in the one where inmates usually meet visitors.Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The family of Filipina convict Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, whose execution was postponed, visited her in Wirogunan Class IIA Penitentiary in Yogyakarta before leaving for the Philippines on Thursday.
The family, including the convicts ex-husband, their two children and her parents, accompanied by her lawyers and a representative of the Filipino Embassy, visited Wirogunan at 8:20 a.m. local time.
They travelled from Cilacap in Central Java, where they had been awaiting her execution. However, the implementation of Velosos death sentence was postponed as the government of the Philippines needs her testimony on the drugs syndicate in the country.
Chief of Wirogunan Penitentiary Zaenal Arifin said that Veloso met her family in a special room.
"Veloso and her family met in a special room, not in the one where inmates usually meet visitors," Arifin noted.
The penitentiary official gave them more time to spend together, allowing the meeting to extend till 2:00 p.m. local time.
"We gave them time till 2:00 p.m. because her family was scheduled to return to the Philippines at 4:00 p.m." Arifin explained.
Veloso is one of the nine convicts sentenced to death for drugs offences, eight of whom the Indonesian government executed on Wednesday, April 29.
President of the Philippines Benigno Aquino lobbied President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Langkawi, Malaysia, last Tuesday to postpone the Filipinas execution.(*)
