"There had been a change in the mentality of visitors of the GBK Sports Complex, especially in terms of disposing their garbage. They are also more actively involved in maintaining cleanliness," said Executive Vice President of PT ISS Indonesia Harinuan Dongoran in Jakarta on Thursday.
Such changes, he said, were reinforced by a number of factors, one of which is the ISS` commitment to ensure that the area is sterile from stray garbage.
"The people will refrain from littering when they see that the area is spotless. It would be a different story if there is garbage everywhere to begin with," he noted.
He further explained that they are not only focused on cleaning up the properties within the Sports Complex but also maintaining the comfort as well as educating the visitors.
"Our focus is to educate the people, at least through the examples carried out by our staff on the field, for example, in sorting out the garbage in accordance with the garbage disposal spaces," he explained.
Apart from the educational factor, the improvement in the behavior of the visitors is also sustained by the adequate hygiene facilities in the GBK Sports Complex.
"The condition in the area is very different now compared to the time we started working here. There are a lot of garbage disposals now. There are more than one thousand, including 200 garbage bins provided by the ISS. During the Asian Games, hygiene staffs were also present around at all times, which made it easier for people to dispose their garbage," he explained.
The improving culture of hygiene of the visitors of the GBK was also witnessed by PT ISS Indonesia`s workers who were on duty in the Baseball arena during the 2018 Asian Games.
Toilet Hygiene
"I witnessed how many people decided to keep their garbage first instead of littering. Usually, things such as tissues, wrappers, and papers would be scattered around the GBK area. During the Asian Games, I did not see such things happening," said one of the ISS workers Tansui Maribeth Simangusong.
She believed that the people were not only paying attention to garbage disposal but also maintaining the cleanliness of the arena, including the restroom.
"The restroom is the area that is most prone to become dirty. However, during the 2018 Asian Games, our workload was lighter as the visitors were also concerned about the cleanliness of the toilet and refrained from disposing tissues outside the designated place and kept the floors dry," she revealed.
Every day, the ISS took out around 30 tons of garbage from the Ring 1 and Ring 2 zones of the GBK Sports Complex during the 2018 Asian Games from Aug 18 to Sept 2.
PT ISS Indonesia, as the company derived from Danish corporation ISS, have been operating in Indonesia since 1996 and in the GBK Sports Complex since May 2017.
Besides the GBK Sports Complex, ISS Indonesia also provides cleaning services to a number of public facilities, buildings, and private offices.
