"The drugs were smuggled into the country via Dumai and will be brought to West Sumatra. We managed to foil the smuggling attempt in Pekanbaru," Director of the Drug Detective Unit of the Riau Provincial Police Senior Commissioner Haryono stated here on Wednesday.
Haryono said the police had seized the contraband smuggled from Malaysia into Indonesia via the coast of Riau Province from the residents of West Sumatra Province.
The two residents, identified by their initials as MU and IW, have been named suspects in the drug case, he stated.
The crystal meth, wrapped in green plastic bags, was concealed in their Toyota Rush car`s spare tire cover, while the 18,750 ecstasy pills were wrapped in red plastic bags, he noted.
He said the two suspects were arrested after police officers chased them on Arengka II Street in the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru on Dec 15.
"The arrest coincided with President Jokowi`s visit to Riau yesterday (Dec 15)," he noted.
The Toyota Rush car carried four people. However, two of them, identified by their initials as IY and AR, escaped, he remarked.
The police has put the two other suspects on the wanted list, he stated.
In the past week, the police also seized 12 kg of crystal meth in Bengkalis District, Riau Province, from three convicts, who escaped the local correctional facility. The three convicts and a courier have been arrested.
