Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - North Sumatra has outlined a target to draw 100 thousand domestic and foreign tourists during the Sail Nias event scheduled to run between July and September 2019 on Nias Island.

North Sumatra Tourism Office Head Hidayati remarked here on Monday that the province was forging synergy with the Tourism Ministry for ensuring the successful implementation of Sail Nias.

"Undoubtedly, this event will bring to the fore North Sumatra's culture and tourism potential at the international level," she informed the press.

The tourism office will hand out souvenirs and ready some one thousand tents along with holding a seminar highlighting culture in Gunungsitoli for Sail Nias, she revealed.

South Nias District Head Hilarius Duha thanked the central government for placing trust on it to host this year's Sail Nias.

Duha particularly appealed to all residing in Nias Island and in North Sumatra, in general, to lend support, so that the international maritime event is held successfully.

Duha expressed hope that Sail Nias would serve as a promotional event to further drive North Sumatra's tourism.

The Sail Nias peak event will be held on September 10-14, 2019.

Sail Nias is part of the Sail Indonesia series held yearly since 2009 in several islands across Indonesia.

The earlier Sail Indonesia series were Sail Moyo Tambora held in West Nusa Tenggara in September 2018, Sail Sabang in Aceh in 2017, Sail Karimata in 2016, Sail Tomini in 2015, Sail Raja Ampat in West Papua in 2014, Sail Komodo in East Nusa Tenggara in 2013, Sail Morotai in 2012, Sail Wakatobi-Belitung in 2011, Sail Banda in Maluku Province in 2010, and Sail Bunaken in North Sulawesi in 2009.
