"Administrative work that can be conducted by computers and artificial intelligence must be foregone," President Jokowi noted in his annual state of the nation address to Parliament on Friday prior to the celebration of Indonesia's 74th Independence Day on August 17.
Further, he called for the need to annul the number of inefficient and irrelevant organizations and officials.
President Jokowi stated that the use of latest technology had opened up opportunities to make things easier, economical, and faster.
In addition, the simplification of procedures and the utilization of new technology at work must be accompanied by organizational simplification. As a result, overlapping functions among ministries or institutions must be combined.
While entering the era of technological development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the government, through the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, is preparing a Draft Law on the Protection of Personal Data that the Parliament is expected to immediately deliberate on.
"Currently, the utilization of artificial intelligence in various sectors utilizes a lot of personal data that has the potential to be misused in the era of digital technology. Hence, the government is currently drafting a Draft Bill on the Protection of Personal Data that has been discussed between ministries. In the near future, the bill is expected to be immediately discussed by the House of Representatives," the ministry’s information technology director general, Semuel A. Pangerapan, had noted in Jakarta, Wednesday (July 25).
Samuel explained that this act was made to protect personal data. The data was, in fact, used in accordance with its purpose.
He called on the need to avoid any misunderstanding in the public that this rule could hinder industrial innovation.
In the draft bill, an independent body will be set up and tasked with managing data, such as data protection authority. The agency will help analyze data processing and maintain a balance between regulation and innovation.
