The epicenter of the quake which struck at 02.53 WIB (West Indonesia Standard Time) was located 165 kilometers northwest of the district at a depth of 11 kilometers, BMKG said on its official website.
The agency warned of potential aftershock.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the quake.
Maluku is one of Indonesian provinces prone to earthquake.
