It is not just a bridge, it can also be one of Surabaya's icons
Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) - The custom-built Joyoboyo Bridge, which also has a colorful fountain as well as a garden, will become the new icon of Surabaya, East Java, revealed Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini in Surabaya, Thursday.

"It is not just a bridge, it can also be one of Surabaya's icons," she said during the groundbreaking event for the bridge in Gunungsari, the northern side of the construction.

The city is developing rather quickly, and the Wonokromo Bridge, which provides access in and out of the city, is no longer enough to accommodate movements, especially considering it was built 50 years ago, Risma said.

"For that reason, in terms of accessibility, we are building this bridge to smoothen the traffic flow, especially in and out of the city," she said.

The bridge will provide better connectivity between the roads in the city and will be connected to the Joyoboyo Intermodal Terminal which is completed with a 'park and ride' facility, as well as the Surabaya Zoo, she further said.

The bridge was specially designed to function beyond its connectivity qualities, but to also become a recreational spot and tourist attraction for the city, she explained.

There will be a spot from where visitors can admire the view of the capital city of East Java. "Hopefully, this bridge can prove beneficial for the people of Surabaya and those who come into the city to visit and take advantage of the uses of the bridge," she said.

The structure measures 150 meters in length, 17 meters in width and 20 meters in height, and is made out of reinforced concrete and voided slabs, Head of the Surabaya Public Works Office, Erna Purnawati, said.

"The contract value is Rp39 billion. It was signed in October 15, 2019 and the approximate time for completion is 420 days," she said.

However, the targeted completion date for the bridge is sometime in October.
