Jakarta (ANTARA) - Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan affirmed that all officers involved in handling COVID-19 were heroes during the pandemic.

Baswedan conveyed this statement during the commemoration of Heroes' Day that falls on November 10 every year.

"For instance, the health officers behind vaccination. We did not know the hard work they had put in, but the benefits of their work were felt by many people. Those are our heroes," Baswedan stated at the Heroes Day commemoration ceremony at the Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday.

In another example, officers who picked up COVID-19 suspects from their homes and transported them to the health facilities are also praiseworthy despite being barely recognizable in their masks and hazardous material suits, he affirmed.

The former education and culture minister urged the public to interpret Heroes’ Day by prioritizing the interests of the public and the nation over and above personal interests as a cue taken from the manner in which the COVID-19 handling officers conducted themselves during the pandemic.

"We have been through a health crisis that affected our economy, socio-culture, health, and other sectors. At this time, we witnessed so many heroes and individuals, who chose to save the lives of others rather than being selfish," Governor Baswedan stated.

Furthermore, the Jakarta provincial government will start a new tradition of visiting the MH. Thamrin tomb at the Karet Bivak Cemetery in Central Jakarta annually on November 10 to commemorate Heroes' Day.

"This morning, along with a local organization, Bamus Betawi, we visited MH. Thamrin's cemetery. We know that MH Thamrin is the name of Jakarta's main street. By God's will, this will become a new tradition that every November 10 we will pay a visit to his cemetery," Baswedan added.
