Ecotourism and edutourism circuits have been launched in regions located along the river, including Puncak, Bogor, Depok, Lenteng Agung, Pejaten, Condet, and Ciliwung Clean Movement Office (GCB) in Penjernihan, Central Jakarta, a representative informed.
"As the water quality of the Ciliwung River has improved to level two, we have ventured to open ecotourism and edutourism," chairwoman of the Ciliwung Clean Movement, Peni Susanti, said on Ciliwung Day commemoration, here on Saturday.
With the opening of tourism, the public and students can take a tour and learn about the background, history, and efforts to preserve the river that stretches 120 km, she added.
She also revealed that when the GCB was established in 1989, the Ciliwung River was very polluted.
Through the efforts of Ciliwung care communities (KPC) and companies, such as Indofood, Indonesia Power, state electricity company PLN, and city-owned tap water company (PAM Jaya), the river's water quality has improved and reached level two, that means, it is viable as a source for tap water, she noted.
As an ecotourism and edutourism destination, the river has several sites of tourist interest, Susanti said.

For instance, at the GCB Secretariat Office located on Penjernihan Street, Karet Bivak, people can learn the river's history at the Ciliwung River Gallery, she pointed out.
Visitors can also learn about the sorting and processing of river waste using TOSS (River Waste Technology) through the method of "peuyeumization", explore the river, and harvest verticulture hydroponic plants while enjoying coffee at the Ciliwung Riverfront shop, she said.
Chairman of KPC Pejaten, H Royani, said visitors will also be able to see endemic and rare prehistoric animals, such as the Senggawangan or giant reptilia (Chitra Chitra javanensis) that weighs 300 kg.
"This animal was found on November 11, 2011. Not only that, but visitors can also learn the culture of the community along the Ciliwung River while tasting typical Betawi food and drinks such as dodol and pletok beer," Royani informed.
Chairman of KPC Lenteng Agung, Sarmili, said visitors can also explore the river and enjoy the garden atmosphere.
"They can learn about handicrafts and innovative products such as the eco-print and other creative products," Sarmili added.
