"Various global problems cannot be solved by one country alone, it requires joint work, collaboration, and mutual assistance between countries in the form of international cooperation," Maharani said at the inaugural meeting of the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) on Wednesday.
P20 is a forum for parliamentary speakers/people's representatives from G20 countries, which aims to bring a parliamentary dimension to global governance and increase political support for international commitments.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting, Maharani said that several global problems can be resolved by involving various stakeholders using a multi-sectoral approach involving security, political, economic, and social solutions.
The Indonesian G20 Presidency has been overshadowed by various crises that have occurred at the same time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, she noted.
Local problems can easily develop into global crises and impact the daily lives of people in various countries, she said.
“Therefore, we must always consider the possibility of a global crisis in domestic policy-making. It is clear that currently, all of our world's problems are connected with each other," she added.
The House Speaker said that every country has the ability to deal with the risk of crisis. Therefore, through joint work, collaboration, and mutual assistance among countries, global problems can be resolved.
"We can only achieve it if we have strong commitment in this P20 forum to solve the global problems based on the decisions taken here," she emphasized.
Maharani said that the world is still facing a pandemic and other problems such as geopolitical tensions, climate change, food and energy scarcity, slow economic growth, and high inflation.
"Each country is taking responses and mitigating fiscal policy, monetary policy, and financial policies to face various possibilities of stagflation that can have an impact on the domestic economy, which may disrupt each country's development," she noted.
The DPR RI held the P20 kick-off meeting in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday, opening a series of meetings ahead of the P20 meeting on October 6–7, 2022. The theme of the P20 is “A Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery.”
The DPR RI is hosting the 8th P20 meeting as part of a series of meetings in the run-up to the G20 Summit. Indonesia is holding the presidency of the multilateral forum currently.
