Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Owen Jenkins, has lauded the efforts made by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X in dealing with COVID-19.

"I really appreciate his leadership in handling the COVID-19 pandemic and his concern for the health and safety of the people of Yogyakarta," Jenkins said after meeting the Sultan at Gedhong Wilis, Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta, on Tuesday.

According to Jenkins, in addition to discussing health and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, they also talked about the potential for cooperation between Yogyakarta and the UK in the creative economy, digital economy, and education sectors.

"This is my official visit to Yogyakarta as the British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, and I am honored to be received by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X," he remarked.

During their meeting, the Sultan and Jenkins also discussed the digitization of manuscripts owned by Yogyakarta Palace, which are stored in the UK.

He said that the British Library has communicated with the Yogyakarta regional government and the Indonesian National Library regarding the manuscripts.

"We are delighted that the manuscript digitization that was conducted in 2019 ran smoothly and there is a priority for digitization in the future. The (Yogyakarta) Governor talks a lot about the Keraton's (Palace's) work in supporting this project, such as (holding) seminars and exhibitions. We are really waiting for further cooperation in this field," Jenkins added.

Ambassador Jenkins said that he is proud that Yogyakarta is one of the hosts of Indonesia's G20 events.

"I am here to attend the G20's Health Ministerial Meeting, which is being held from yesterday until today. I am happy that the Digital Working Group (meeting) is being held in Yogyakarta and is a special tribute for Yogyakarta as a suitable host for this event," he added.
