Jakarta (ANTARA) - Additional budget support could help increase the frequency of activities and programs for handling radicalism and terrorism across the country, head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), Commissioner-General Boy Rafli Amar, has said.

The proposed budget increase could also help expand the activities' scope and provision of support to facilities and infrastructure, he added here on Tuesday.

Increasing the frequency of such activities is aimed at developing national preparedness, strengthening deradicalization efforts, and countering radicalization in the future, he explained.

"These activities are constantly communicated to partners at the DPR (House of Representatives) Commission II and adjusted based on the condition of the state's finance," he informed.

He cited the radicalism and terrorism vulnerability research program as an example. The activity necessitates increased budget support so that even more cities can be covered by the research study.

The mapping done by BNPT is based on the research study, which has produced strategic steps for mitigating radicalism and terrorism, he said.

Moreover, the agency is working at the level of policies and strategic steps, and encouraging stakeholders to contribute to mitigation efforts in a holistic manner.

BNPT is also cooperating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to conduct research on the radicalism vulnerability index.

"There are at least 250 cities that we can perform research in. I expect that we can begin in 2023," Amar said.

Earlier, deputy speaker of DPR’s Commission III, Pangeran Khairul Saleh, said that the commission had approved BNPT's suggestion on foreign loans worth US$160 million and State Sharia Securities (SBSN) worth Rp290 billion in 2022.

The suggestion was approved to bolster terrorism mitigation and prevent violence-based extremism that leans toward terrorism, he explained here on May 30, 2022.

The commission will pursue an additional proposal by BNPT to increase the institution's budget by Rp64,420,694, which will raise BNPB's total budget in 2023 to Rp493,587,821,000.
