Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini lauded the community service and empowerment program (PPM) implemented by the University of Indonesia (UI) as a form of response to address social problems.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Rismaharini underscored the importance of higher education institutions to contribute to the handling of various social problems.

"This activity is direly needed for regions. This shows that the University of Indonesia is very responsive and sensitive to the needs of the community, in this case, the regions," Rismaharini stated at the launch of the University of Indonesia's 2022 Community Service and Empowerment Program "UI Serves, For The Country, Rise Stronger" on Monday (August 15).

Minister Rismaharini called for strengthening collaboration between the government and varsities in the wake of increasingly complex challenges.

Indonesia has the potential and resources to meet the needs of its people independently without relying on other countries, she affirmed. This potential is not only in the form of natural wealth but also the large population that can become Indonesia's asset to advance.

To this end, the minister highlighted the importance of mutual efforts to ensure that those potentials can be developed and proffer benefits to the community. To this end, she urged all sectors to work hand in hand to create community welfare.

"This launch is a good form of collaboration between the government, universities, and the private sector. If it continues to be strengthened, this collaboration will accelerate development," Rismaharini explained.

She believes that academicians will share their knowledge and skills during the interaction process with the community.

Hence, she called for local governments to make the most of the community service and empowerment program conducted by UI.

According to the minister, the program offers enormous benefits to the locals, especially in fostering economic independence and convenience in the day-to-day lives of communities.
