Jakarta (ANTARA) - The private sector plays an essential role in realizing a better economy, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, said at the recent 70th anniversary commemoration of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo).

In addition to issuing a policy to push short-term economic recovery, the government has also promulgated a medium- to long-term structural reform policy through the Job Creation Law and electronic business licensing services (OSS-RBA), including making efforts to encourage the downstreaming of commodities to boost industrial added value.

"Through this policy, it is hoped that competitiveness and ease of doing business in Indonesia can be improved. In order for the effectiveness of this reform agenda to be successful, the government hopes for support and cooperation from all parties, including from the private sector, the community, and stakeholders," Hartarto said in an official statement released here on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, to answer the challenge of climate change, the government is still committed to developing a sustainable economy. To this end, the government has devised a carbon economic value mechanism, which will serve as the basis for providing incentives to companies to encourage emission reduction.

The resilience of Indonesia's external sector is still well maintained, with support from the balance of trade that has been in surplus for 27 consecutive months.

Various key indicators, such as the Consumer Confidence Index and retail sales, have also continued to grow in line with the Purchasing Manager's Index, which has continued to be at an expansive level.

The minister noted that Indonesia's inflation was relatively under control at 4.94 percent year on year in July 2022 amid increasing global inflation.

To face the current challenges, the government has called for support and cooperation from all parties, especially the private sector. Apindo's role as a government partner is deemed vital in terms of providing critical and constructive inputs for policy-making at various levels of government.

According to the minister, Apindo has also contributed significantly to creating jobs and building good industrial relations to increase productivity and provide decent jobs for workers. Industrial relations have gone well in the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, even amid a tough situation.
