Biak had exported fresh tuna thrice to Japan via Garuda Indonesia flights, Head of the Biak Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office Efendi Igirisa noted in a statement here on Monday
Biak first exported 1.5 tons of fresh tuna to Japan, followed by the second export amounting to 2.5 tons, and the third export reaching 5,371 kg, or 5.3 tons.
"We are striving to increase Biak's fresh tuna export shipments to Japan," he stated.
Biak could export fresh tuna more than once a week to Japan depending on Garuda Indonesia's flight schedule.
The fresh tuna exported to Japan are of the Big Eye and Yellow Fin types, according to Igirisa.
In addition to fresh tuna, Biak exports frozen tuna and other types of fish.
Biak has a cold storage facility, with a capacity to store 200 tons of fish collected from local fishermen.
The delivery of fresh tuna to export destination countries is conducted by PT Indo Pasifik Numfor, which already has a Fish Management Unit (UPI) in the warehouse of PT Pelindo Indonesia's Biak Branch.
"Various efforts have been pursued by Biak District Head Herry Ario Naap to increase Biak's fresh tuna exports, among others, by building communication with the central government and investors," he stated.
