Jakarta (ANTARA) - As much as 29 tons of salt (NaCl) has been spread in Bali’s skies to modify the weather to support G20 Summit activities, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has said.

"The weather modification technology (TMC) is a part of the weather mitigation scenario that has been prepared to anticipate extreme weather so that the G20 Summit in Bali runs smoothly and successfully, and all heads of state and delegates can hold meetings safely and comfortably,” BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati informed here on Wednesday.

According to Karnawati, Cassa 212 and CN 295 aircraft carried out at least 28 sorties to spread 29 tons of salt in the skies of Bali. This was a part of the TMC’s operations, which will continue to be carried out until November 16, 2022.

The TMC’s operations, which are being coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, are being controlled from two posts, one in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and another in Banyuwangi, East Java, she said.

The TMC’s operations have also determined where the largest quantity of salt would be spread, namely, rain clouds, she explained.

The salt seeding has been conducted to quicken the condensation process so that rain would occur before the clouds reach the G20 Summit venue.

"BMKG's support (for the G20 Summit) is by providing information on wind direction, location of targeted clouds, weather prediction, and potential growth of rain clouds during the G20 events," the BMKG head said.

According to her, the salt spreading has been carried out by a team consisting of personnel from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Air Force. The team has followed up on the information provided by BMKG and made a plan to spread the salt.

"Insya Allah (God willing), we are optimistic that with TMC in Lombok and in Banyuwangi, the implementation of the G20 Summit will run smoothly and successfully," she added.
