Bandung, W Java (ANTARA) - The Bandung City Police in West Java have begun raiding shops suspected of selling liquor without a permit to curb crimes that may cause public unrest ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.



Quite a few criminal offenses start with alcohol consumption, chief of the Bandung City Police, Senior Commissioner Aswin Sipayung, said ihere on Saturday.



"All police precincts under the jurisdiction of the Bandung City Police will conduct the raid every day," he informed.

Some of the police precincts have seized hundreds of bottles of liquor sold without a permit during raids.



The Andir police precinct has seized 114 bottles of liquor, Ujungberung police precinct 40 bottles of liquor, and Cibeuying Kidul police precinct has confiscated 100 bottles of liquor.



In addition to seizing liquor, police have also asked shops selling liquor without a permit to make a statement saying that they will not sell liquor any longer, he informed.

He said he has also ordered his ranks to disperse crowds of motorists while conducting patrols.



"That (measure) is aimed at preventing a brawl or commotion so the public, particularly Bandung residents, will feel safe and comfortable," he added.
