Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has sought the swift completion of the household water network under the Dumai, Rokan Hilir, and Bengkalis regional drinking water supply system (Durolis SPAM).

On Thursday, the President said that the water supply system can still be optimized because currently, it only provides 400 liters of water per second.

He delivered the statement at the inauguration ceremony of Durolis SPAM in Rokan Hilir district, Riau province.

"Therefore, this will consistently be followed up if the 32 thousand households’ (water) network (issue) can be resolved," he said.

According to Widodo, the water supply system was constructed at a significant cost. It is worth Rp396.6 billion, and the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry has developed it on land provided by the Rokan Hilir district government.

The supply system is meant to provide access to good quality drinking water to the residents of the three places.

“Hopefully, this will be a (means of) supplying good quality drinking water to Rokan Hilir, Bengkalis, and Dumai, which will make people healthy, prosperous," said the President.

The government is continuously making efforts to resolve clean water issues across Indonesia, he added.

On a separate occasion, head of the Rokan Hilir SPAM’s technical implementation unit, Zulkarnain, said that Durolis SPAM will have a capacity of up to 1,550 liters per second.

Water from Durolis SPAM has been channeled to 4,190 houses in Rokan Hilir district, 1,800 houses in Dumai city, and 5,100 houses in Bengkalis district, he added.

Zulkarnain said that the drinking water supply system has proved very beneficial for people living in the three areas, where groundwater cannot be used because of its poor quality.

"After having Durolis SPAM, next we do the processing. This becomes very, very useful, because (the water) becomes fitting to be consumed by the people," he added.
