"Bali is the only province in Indonesia that holds a month-long celebration of Bung Karno," stated Bali Governor Wayan Koster during the opening event in Denpasar, Bali, on Thursday.
He also mentioned that this is the fifth year that Bung Karno Month is being observed.
At Denpasar Cultural Park, Koster explained that the purpose of Bung Karno Month is not only to pay tribute to the first Indonesian President, Soekarno, but also to promote the mainstreaming of Pancasila in Balinese society and enhance public understanding of the history, philosophy, and values of Pancasila.
The governor emphasized that the event aims to strengthen the spirit of nationalism and social inclusion in the face of globalization and different ideologies.
Furthermore, the observance of Bung Karno Month seeks to awaken and preserve the collective memory of Soekarno's legacy and reinforce the institutionalization of Pancasila and Soekarno's spirit of struggle, in line with Balinese local wisdom.
The 5th edition of Bung Karno Month in Bali carries the theme "Mahajnana Segara Kerthi", which translates to "the glorification of the ocean" as a means of deepening Soekarno's teachings.
Koster also linked this year's Pancasila Day to the post-pandemic recovery of Bali's tourism and economy.
"I recently welcomed the arrival of the largest aircraft, the A380 owned by Emirates, in Bali, carrying 500 passengers from the US and Europe. Therefore, June 1 signifies the revival of tourism and the economy in Bali," he remarked.
Meanwhile, Ngurah Wiryanatha, the head of the Bali National and Political Unity Agency, stated that this year's Bung Karno Month will feature competitions, social activities, as well as art and music performances.
The opening ceremony at Denpasar Cultural Park was attended by over four thousand people and was highlighted by an orchestra performance by ISI Denpasar.
