Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has emphasized that his government is striving to continue and develop the great ideas conceived by Indonesia's founder and first president, Soekarno, for the nation.

"What we, the government, are doing right now is to implement, to continue, and develop major steps and ideas of Bung Karno," he highlighted, as observed on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Saturday.

In his remarks, the President referred to Soekarno as Bung Karno — the nickname with which he was affectionately addressed by Indonesians.

At the 2023 Bung Karno Month (BBK) commemoration event at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium here, he said that marking the birth anniversary of Soekarno, who was born in June, is not merely meant to assemble or celebrate but to reiterate the commitment to implementing his teachings on nation-building among the people.

Soekarno is more than an independence fighter and the proclamator of Indonesia's independence. He is also the formulator of Indonesia's ideology, Pancasila, President Jokowi added.

Soekarno was the architect of the Indonesian nation, its governance, democracy, and progress, he said.

"Bung Karno was also the enlightener of the world; he fought for the independence of nations and strived for justice in the world," he added.

The first president also guided the struggle of the Indonesian nation, he added.

Jokowi then called upon citizens to develop Indonesia into a great nation and a lighthouse that shines its brilliance upon the world.

Indonesia, he said, should also be a strong nation that remains politically sovereign, economically self-reliant, and culturally preserve its own character.
