"Construction of the coastal embankment in Jakarta is targeted for completion this year," director general of water resources at the ministry, Bob Arthur, informed in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Arthur said that the flood control measures on the coast of Jakarta Bay comprise building infrastructure in the form of coastal and estuary embankments, polder systems, and environmental drainage arrangements.
The critical coastline and river estuaries along Jakarta Bay, as per the 2016 National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) Design Details and review, span 46.2 kilometers in length.
During the period from 2014 to 2019, the construction of 13 kilometers of coastal and estuary embankments was carried out by the central and Jakarta provincial governments as well as private sector players.
Thus, 25 kilometers of the coastline and river estuaries remained categorized as critical and untreated.
In 2020, the construction of coastal embankments was jointly carried out by the PUPR Ministry and the Jakarta provincial government, and the work was reviewed in 2023.
As of 2023, the ministry has worked on 8.2 kilometers of embankments at Muara Baru Beach, Kali Baru Beach, Kamal Muara Beach, Ancol River, Cakung Drain, Cengkareng Drain, and Dadap River. It has also built three retention ponds in Cilincing.
In 2024, the ministry will work on a 1.6-kilometer-long coastal and estuary embankment as well as a retention pond at Kamal Muara Beach - Dadap and the Dadap River Estuary.
"This beach embankment and estuary are the completion of the agreement we made with the DKI Jakarta provincial government for this development," Arthur informed.
Regarding the construction of a giant sea wall, he said that it could be done as a last resort if land subsidence in Jakarta continues.
The stage B approach of flood control on the coast of Jakarta Bay could be implemented if land subsidence continues. The approach involves building open sea dike infrastructure.
Currently, the PUPR Ministry is continuing to monitor the process of land subsidence in Jakarta, said Arthur.
"That's why we built a monitoring well to see the subsidence of Jakarta's land surface. We continue to carry out monitoring to monitor land subsidence events that occur throughout Jakarta," he added.
