We had already reached figures above US$5-6 billion (in fishery product exports)Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is targeting the total value gained from Indonesia's national fishery product exports to reach US$7.2 billion this year.
"We had already reached figures above US$5-6 billion (in fishery product exports). Hence, I think it is reasonable to reach US$7.2 billion," he remarked in an activity titled "Outlook and Priority Programs of the Maritime and Fishery Sectors" here on Wednesday.
Trenggono expressed optimism about Indonesia reaching the target while noting that the government will strive to achieve it by implementing the Measurable Fishing Program regulated in Government Regulation No. 11 of 2023.
He emphasized that by implementing the program, the government will be able to better monitor fishing activities at home and focus them on certain types of fish based on market demands.
The proper implementation of the program is expected to ramp up the production rate and quality of fishery products while offering them at preferred prices to global markets, he remarked.

The minister further noted that the government is aiming to push the country's fishery sector to produce as much as 30.85 million tons of fishery products in 2024.
According to Trenggono, the contribution of the fishery sector to Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) this year is expected to reach 5-6 percent.
He expressed hope that the ratio of fish exports absorbed by destination countries would reach 99 percent.
Furthermore, he noted that the fishermen's exchange rate is targeted at 108 points and fish farmers' exchange rate at 105 points.
He then remarked that the government had also set the target for this year's total national production of salt at two million tons, adding that the people's fish consumption rate is expected to hit 59 kilograms per capita per year.
