Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has provided Rp350 million (around US$22,489) to accelerate the handling of floods in Dayeuhkolot sub-district, Bandung district, West Java.

BNPB head Suharyanto informed that the funds will be used to handle evacuees during the emergency response status period.

"In the initial stage, the Rp350 million funds will be used for seven days. Of course, if there is a shortage, the funds will be increased," he said in Bandung district on Monday.

BNPB has also provided assistance in the form of logistics and equipment, such as tents, staple goods, blankets, mattresses, electricity generators, ready-to-eat food, rubber boats, and personal hygiene packages.

"The Bandung district head has set emergency dates for seven days. We will ensure that the basic needs of the evacuees during the seven days are truly handled and fulfilled," he said.

He added that after the emergency response period ends, the BNPB will be involved in handling floods in Bandung district.

Suharyanto said that comprehensive action is needed for handling floods in the area so that the results can be optimal and comprehensive.

"We agree that this handling is not only (to be carried out) during the emergency response period, but we will also handle it in the medium term. This is being done so that in the rainy season at the beginning of 2025, there will be no more flooding in this area," he explained.

On Thursday (January 11, 2024), heavy rains in Bandung district caused the Cigede River embankment to breach, causing severe flooding in Citeureup village, Dayeuhkolot sub-district, and its surrounding areas. The floodwaters submerged 2,203 houses and affected tens of thousands of residents.

The BNPB head also assured that the central government has prepared aid amounting to Rp60 million (around US$3,855) for residents whose houses have been heavily damaged, Rp30 million (around US$1,927) for those whose houses have been moderately damaged, and Rp15 million (around US$963.85) for those whose houses have been lightly damaged in the floods.
