Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is seeking to ensure sustainable construction in the new national capital Nusantara by using green cement supplied by state-owned PT Semen Indonesia (SIG).

"The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) is seeking to encourage the supply of domestic industry-based material resources and construction equipment, which can support sustainable infrastructure development principles," PUPR Ministry's secretary general, Mohammad Zainal Fatah, informed in Jakarta on Monday.

The ministry is also encouraging collaboration between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to realize sustainable construction.

One of the forms of collaboration is cooperation in providing green cement, cement-based products, cement derivative products, and other building materials between SIG and PT Bina Karya, a state-owned company tasked with carrying out property development in Nusantara.

According to SIG president director Donny Arsal, green cement produces lower carbon emissions than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) during the production process.

Through green cement production, the company has so far recorded a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 38 percent per ton of cement.

Arsal said that apart from quality and low-carbon products, the company also pursues added value related to efficiency to guarantee supply availability and on-time delivery.

"SIG has the advantage of extensive production and distribution networks that are able to meet development needs in all regions in Indonesia," he added.

SIG was chosen to supply materials for infrastructure development needs in the new capital in December 2022. As of February 2024, the company has supplied 400 thousand tons of cement from its production facilities in Balikpapan and Samarinda, which are located near Nusantara.

Bina Karya president director Boyke Prasetyanto expressed the hope that the collaboration with SIG will run smoothly.

"We hope that through this cooperation, all buildings in Nusantara will not only apply the concept of green building but also green construction because they use environmentally friendly building materials," he said.
