Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati, who represents Indonesia, made the statement at the UN forum titled “The 78th session of the Executive Council (EC-78) WMO” held on June 10-14 in Geneva, Switzerland.
"Consider not being limited to information services in the context of anticipating, but also (the WMO) must consider what actions must be taken on the impact," Karnawati noted in an online video broadcast monitored in Jakarta, Thursday.
Karnawati explained that formulating and implementing actions to deal with the impacts of disasters together will offer greater benefits.
It also has direct implications for the global and regional community than the information services about weather and climate that have so far been carried out by the WMO, she highlighted.
On the other hand, the BMKG commended the information services from the UN agency, as it had comprehensively explained El Nino and La Nina phenomena as triggers for climate vulnerability, drought, extreme weather, heavy rain, strong winds, and other derivative hydro-meteorological disasters.
In this case, Karnawati highlighted that Indonesia was one of the countries that experienced benefits from WMO's information, which further strengthened the reliability and accuracy of anticipating the potential impacts that El Nino and La Nina would have on society.
However, the disparity in terms of the availability of the latest technological equipment and individual expertise or ability in analyzing the climate dynamics of several countries to anticipate potential impacts had been among the main reasons for the world institution to consider the BMKG idea.
Hence, the BMKG expressed hope that the WMO council, with all its resources in the near future, would facilitate the action together with climate and weather authorities from member countries in an active and sustainable manner.
"Please consider this (idea), especially members," the former rector of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) stated.
