Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif University, Ahmad Muhammad Ahmed Al-Tayeb, commended Indonesia's unwavering support for peace and the end of Israeli aggression in Palestine's Gaza.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi spoke about Al-Tayeb praising Indonesia after accompanying President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on his meeting with the prominent Sunni Muslim scholar at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"The grand sheikh commended Indonesia's role in the Palestine issue," Marsudi stated.

She affirmed that Indonesia is committed to playing its role in helping victims of Israeli aggression and calling for the fulfillment of the rights of Palestine and its people at international forums.

Indonesia is also actively advocating for the Palestinian interest in international organizations, such as the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, she added.

During the two-hour meeting with Jokowi, Al-Tayeb lamented Israel's inhumane aggression in the Gaza Strip, which killed more than 38,000 Palestinians and had continued unabated in its ninth month, Marsudi noted.

"The grand sheikh highlighted the importance of unity among nations to achieve the immediate cessation of hostilities," she remarked.

She highlighted that Jokowi and Al-Tayeb are on the same page regarding the need for the international community to continue pushing for a lasting ceasefire and uninterrupted distribution of humanitarian aid to those in need.

"The grand sheikh seconded Mr. President's view on the need to immediately put an end to the war and achieve peace," she stated.

Al-Tayeb is embarking on a world tour for global peace in several Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
