Nurhadi, an expert at the agency's Center for Mineral, Coal, and Geothermal Resources (PSDMBP), said that Indonesia has 362 locations with geothermal potential in various regions.
"Even in Kalimantan, which we call a source of coal, and oil and gas basins, there is still geothermal potential," he said on Wednesday.
However, of the 362 locations with geothermal potential, only 61 have been explored, he added.
Indonesia also has 18 geothermal power plants, including those managed by the private sector.
Nurhadi stated that of the 23,531 megawatts (MW) of geothermal resources available, only around 11 percent, or 2,374.4 MW, are utilized for meeting electricity needs.
He expressed hope that further efforts would be made to explore the potential of geothermal locations spread across various regions to encourage the use of new and renewable energy.
